Natural Chicken Health

Taking care of your chickens' health naturally can be simple - if we go back to basics! Here at Pets Natural Health Store, we encourage hen & rooster owners to start by thinking about what nature would provide for them, and take it from there!

Foundations for good health, whether we're talking about humans or animals, include quality nutrition, exercise, quality sleep and minimising toxins in the body.

A natural diet for chickens

In the wild, chickens are omnivores, naturally consuming a diverse diet that includes meats, insects, fruits, nuts, and vegetables. To replicate this natural diet, you can feed your chickens a variety of foods that are readily available.

Fresh fruits like watermelon, strawberries, and blueberries make excellent snacks when given in moderation. Vegetables are also essential; consider incorporating flock favourites such as lettuce, beets, broccoli, carrots, kale, Swiss chard, squash, pumpkins, and cucumbers. This variety ensures that your chickens receive a balanced diet rich in the nutrients they need to thrive.

Foods for healthy egg production

For optimal egg production, it's essential to provide your chickens with specific nutrients that support their laying capabilities. Certain foods can help enhance the quality and quantity of eggs.

  • Garlic, known for its immune-boosting properties, also acts as a laying stimulant

  • Parsley, rich in vitamins, not only supports overall health but also stimulates egg production

  • Ginger, high in essential vitamins, helps control parasites and can contribute to better laying outcomes

  • Thyme supports respiratory health, which is vital for laying hens

  • Basil and oregano offer antibacterial properties and immunity boosts, respectively.

Beneficial herbs for chickens

Incorporating herbs into your chickens' diet can provide numerous health benefits.

  • Oregano, with its natural antibacterial and antiviral properties, helps reduce the risk of disease and enhances egg flavour

  • Basil aids in digestion and supplies essential vitamins and minerals. Parsley is another digestion aid, rich in vitamins

  • Garlic, used in moderation, boosts the immune system and deters parasites

  • Lavender has a calming effect and helps deter pests

  • Mint also provides a calming effect and repels pests like flies and rodents

You can offer these herbs fresh or dried, and even grow them in your chicken coop or run as part of a "chicken garden." Always introduce new herbs gradually and consult with a veterinarian to ensure safety and proper usage.

Preventing parasites

Naturally preventing parasites from affecting your chickens involves maintaining a clean environment and using effective natural products. Neempet Poultry Dust is a highly recommended option for dusting your hens, their roosts, and nesting boxes. This natural dust helps deter mites and lice, ensuring your chickens remain healthy and comfortable. Regularly applying Neempet Poultry Dust can significantly reduce the risk of parasitic infestations.

Another excellent natural product is Diatomaceous Earth (DE), which can be used to deter mites and lice effectively. When adding DE to a chicken dust bath, it's essential to use a 2:1 ratio of dirt to DE powder. DE can be sprinkled in sandy areas of the coop, nesting boxes, and around the coop to keep parasites at bay. DE works by slicing into the outer shell of parasites, leading to dehydration and death. Additionally, DE contains high levels of natural soluble silica and many trace minerals, which improve egg production and contribute to stronger, healthier birds.
